Add open password (basic protection)

Adds a standard PDF password so the file asks for a password before opening. Uses legacy PDF encryption (RC4 128-bit) for broad reader compatibility. Processing runs on our servers; the file is not stored after download. This is basic document protection — not a substitute for dedicated security, legal redaction, or DRM.

How it works

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as “military-grade” or AES-256 encryption?

No. PDF open passwords use the security model built into the PDF format (here, RC4 128-bit for compatibility). It discourages casual access but is not comparable to full-disk encryption or modern app-level secrecy guarantees.

What is the difference between open and owner passwords?

The open password is required to view the document. The owner password can be used by some tools to control printing and copying restrictions, depending on the reader.

Is my file uploaded?

Yes. Password application is done server-side; the file is processed in memory and not stored after we return your download.

Can I remove the password later?

Open the PDF with the password in any reader and save or re-export without security, or use our Unlock PDF tool when you know the password.
